25 May 1970 - Sergeant Luther Davis is assigned to the HH-3E squadron at Da Nang AB, RVN.  He is on his second combat tour.  When an Army UH-1 is downed, he and his crew attempt to rescue them. Their helicopter is shot down and catches fire. Sergeant Davis and the helicopter flight engineer are also both on fire but escape the wreckage. The pilot of the HH-3 is killed. The copilot puts the fire out on Sergeant Davis and the FE.  The high bird is quickly overhead , deploys it's PJ, and extracts the badly injured men.  All are hospitalized, but Luther's condition is such that he needs definitive burn care.  He is swiftly evacuated to a burn facility in Japan where he is placed in intensive care.  The diagnosis is grim:  he is too severely burned to survive.  The decision is made to transport him to the CONUS where his last moments may be with his family.  Sergeant Davis dies en route.
