Site Mission: Provide Pararescue and Air Rescue History

Distinguished Flying Cross Recipient

Attention to orders. Citation to accompany the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Technical Sergeant David J. Wheeler

Technical Sergeant David J. Wheeler distinguished himself by extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a Pararescue Technician near Quang-Tri, Republic of Vietnam on 4 December 1965.  On that date, Sergeant Wheeler flew on a rescue mission to evacuate wounded Vietnamese from an outpost in adverse weather conditions.  He quickly and expertly loaded the wounded into the helicopter and gave them medical aid as the helicopter departed, under hostile fire, to airlift the wounded to a hospital.  The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Wheeler reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
