Airman
First Class Terrence A. Treutel distinguished himself by
extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial
flight as Pararescueman aboard an HH-43F helicopter near
Bien Hoa Air Base, Republic of Vietnam on 3 December 1967.
On that date, Airman Treutel was called upon to rescue
members of a US Army Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol in an
extremely hostile jungle area 53 miles northwest of Bien Hoa.
The patrol had notified their headquarters by radio that
they had been surrounded by a large hostile force and there
was no possible escape route. After two unsuccessful rescue
attempts by the Army, Airman Treutel arrived over their
position. As the helicopter settled into a hover over the
patrol, Airman Treutel was positioned in the exposed aft end
of the aircraft to watch for hostile troop activity and also
to return any encountered ground fire. Airman Treutel kept
the pilot constantly advised of the situation to the rear of
the aircraft and was also ready to descend the hoist to
render assistance to the ground party. Airman Treutel
remained at this precarious station for ten long minutes
until the rescue was completed. The professional
competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by
Airman Treutel reflect great credit upon himself and the
United States Air Force.
