Site Mission: Provide Pararescue and Air Rescue History

Distinguished Flying Cross Recipient

Attention to orders. Citation to accompany the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Sergeant Johnny L. Riddick

Sergeant Johnny L. Riddick distinguished himself by heroism while participating in aerial flight as an HH-53C Pararescue Specialist in Southeast Asia on 18 February 1970. On that date, Sergeant Riddick and his fellow crewmembers flew their rescue helicopter deep into hostile territory in an attempt to rescue a downed American airman. They pursued the rescue attempt until their bullet riddled aircraft became critically damaged and they were forced to abandon the effort. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Riddick reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
