Sergeant Roger A. Porter distinguished himself by
extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial
flight as a pararescueman at Bien Hoa Air Base, Republic of
Vietnam on 21 August 1967. On that date, Sergeant Porter, a
pararescueman aboard an HH-43 helicopter, flew to the aid of
a seriously injured pilot who had ejected at low altitude
from an A-37 aircraft. Without hesitation, Sergeant Porter
thoroughly determined the extent of the man’s injuries and
expertly administered vitally needed first aid treatment.
Sergeant Porter carefully placed the man in a stokes litter
and loaded him aboard the rescue helicopter for the flight
to a nearby hospital. During this flight, Sergeant Porter
continued his intensive care for the patient, treating him
for shock and preventing the man from choking by clearing
his air passages. The professional competence, aerial
skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Porter
reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air
Force.
