Site Mission: Provide Pararescue and Air Rescue History

Distinguished Flying Cross Recipient

Attention to orders. Citation to accompany the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross
to
Airman Second Class Luther E. Davis

Airman Second Class Luther E. Davis distinguished himself by heroism while participating in aerial flight as an HH-3E Pararescue Specialist in Southeast Asia on 20 October 1966. On that date, Airman Davis made a successful rescue in an area of intense, accurately directed hostile fire which severely damaged his unarmed rescue helicopter, forcing him to land and abandon his aircraft in hostile territory. Airman Davis, after withstanding withering gun fire while hovering in the face of hostile forces, executed a successful pick-up of a wounded American pilot. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Airman Davis reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
