Captain John R. Weimer Jr. Distinguished himself by extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as the Aircraft Commander of an HH-53 Rescue Helicopter near the Demilitarized Zone, Republic of Vietnam, on 22 March 1971. On that date, Captain Weimer’s exemplary leadership, outstanding airmanship and sound judgment, displayed under difficult conditions, contributed greatly to the attempted pickup of two downed aircrew members. With complete disregard for his own personal safety, and despite the threat of small arms and anti- aircraft artillery fire, and surface-to-air missiles, Captain Weimer stayed in the area until impending darkness and adverse weather conditions forced him to abandon the attempt. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Weimer reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
