Site Mission: Provide Pararescue and Air Rescue History

Distinguished Flying Cross Recipient

Attention to orders. Citation to accompany the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross
to
Staff Sergeant James B. Moore

Staff Sergeant James B. Moore distinguished himself by extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a CH-3E Helicopter Flight Engineer in Southeast Asia on 3 February 1969.  On that date Sergeant Moore successfully aided in the rescue of an Army Long Range Reconnaissance Team which was under heavy attack, deep in hostile territory.  His helicopter hovered in the midst of a large fire, suppressing the flames, as the beleaguered troops were taken aboard amidst hostile forces.  During the rescue, Sergeant Moore stood in the open door of the helicopter, fully exposed to hostile ground fire, to direct the pilot in his hover, and to return the fire with the helicopter’s machine guns.  The profession competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Moore reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
