Site Mission: Provide Pararescue and Air Rescue History

Distinguished Flying Cross Recipient

Attention to orders. Citation to accompany the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross
First Oak Leaf Cluster to Major Richard L. Mehr

Major Richard L. Mehr distinguished himself by heroism while participating in aerial flight as an A-1E Skyraider pilot in Southeast Asia on 10 April 1967. On that date, Major Mehr repeatedly exposed himself to withering fire from hostile anti-aircraft artillery and automatic weapon positions at low altitude and very low airspeed for over one hour in a valiant and determined effort to locate and rescue a downed pilot. With unwavering courage and determination Major Mehr continued the search in the face of intense and accurate fire, until he was forced by darkness and minimum fuel to leave the area. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Major Mehr reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
