Site Mission: Provide Pararescue and Air Rescue History

Distinguished Flying Cross Recipient

Attention to orders. Citation to accompany the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross
to
Captain James H. Kiehle

Captain James H. Kiehle distinguished himself by heroism while participating in aerial flight as an A-1E Skyraider pilot over North Vietnam on 21 June 1967. On that date, Captain Kiehle was flying his A-1E Skyraider in support of a Search and Rescue effort for a downed RF-1O1 pilot approximately seventy five miles west of Hanoi, North Vietnam. The RF-101 had been hit by a surface-to-air missile; the pilot ejected within five miles of the missile site. Despite the close proximity of the missile site which launched three surface-to-air missiles at the rescue force, numerous antiaircraft artillery positions, automatic weapons and heavy ground fire, Captain Kiehle remained in the area for more than one hour contributing directly and significantly to the successful recovery of the downed pilot. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Captain Kiehle reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
