Site Mission: Provide Pararescue and Air Rescue History

Distinguished Flying Cross Recipient

Attention to orders. Citation to accompany the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross
to
Technical Sergeant Charles W. Jackson

Technical Sergeant Charles W. Jackson distinguished himself by extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a Rescue Crew Loadmaster aboard and HC-130P aircraft over hostile territory on 24 April 1968. On that date, Sergeant Jackson played a vital role in locating the survivors of two separate aircraft crashes. During both search and rescue efforts Sergeant Jackson operated the Cook tracker and provided bearings that enabled the navigator to quickly pinpoint the survivors' locations. The Cook tracker is a complex electronic unit normally operated by the radio operator, but Sergeant Jackson, on his own initiative, had learned its operation to enable himself to make a greater contribution to search and rescue efforts should the occasion arise. Sergeant Jackson's extensive knowledge of rescue procedures and operations of his aircraft's equipment were vital contributing factors to the success of the mission and the saving of thirteen survivors from certain capture and possible death at the hands of hostile forces. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Jackson reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
