Site Mission: Provide Pararescue and Air Rescue History

Distinguished Flying Cross Recipient

Attention to orders. Citation to accompany the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross
to
Sergeant Harry C. Chalmers

Sergeant Harry C. Chalmers distinguished himself by extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a Pararescue specialist on an HH-43B helicopter on 1 November 1969. On that date, Sergeant Chalmers aided immeasurably in successfully accomplishing an extremely hazardous over water night rescue of a downed pilot. During the rescue, Sergeant Chalmers had to jump from the helicopter to aid the drowning pilot. Despite the adverse weather conditions, the time from initial alert to the survivor pilot entering the hospital was 28 minutes. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Chalmers reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
