Site Mission: Provide Pararescue and Air Rescue History

Distinguished Flying Cross Recipient

Attention to orders. Citation to accompany the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Airman First Class Terry E. Caffery

Airman First Class Terry E. Caffery distinguished himself by heroism while participating in aerial flight as a Pararescueman on an HH-53C helicopter in Southeast Asia on 5 December 1969. On that date, Airman Caffery and his fellow crewmembers attempted the rescue of an American Airman from one of the most heavily defended areas in Southeast Asia. Airman Caffery provided suppressive fire to protect the helicopter until the crew was forced to abandon the effort because of severe battle damage. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Airman Caffery reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
