SSgt John L. Beaty distinguished himself by extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an HH-53 Pararescue Specialist in Southeast Asia on 21 April 1970. On that date, Sergeant Beaty and his fellow crewmembers attempted the rescue of an American airman from heavily defended hostile territory. Sergeant Beaty provided suppressive fire to protect his helicopter and his fellow crewmembers, despite heavy and accurate hostile ground fire, until one of his fellow crewmembers was critically wounded and the helicopter was forced to leave the area. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Beaty reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
