Site Mission: Provide Pararescue and Air Rescue History

Bronze Star Recipient

Attention to orders. Citation to accompany the award of the Bronze Star Medal to Master Sergeant William V. Vargas

Master Sergeant William V. Vargas distinguished himself by meritorious service as Aircrew Standardization Pararescueman, while engaged in ground operations against an opposing armed force at Third Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Group, Tan Son Nhut Air Base, Republic of Vietnam, from 21 April 1970 to 10 December 1970. In this critical assignment, the leadership, exemplary foresight and ceaseless efforts consistently demonstrated by Sergeant Vargas resulted in a significant contribution to the effectiveness of the United State Air Force rescue operations in Southeast Asia. So effective were these rescue forces during this period, over 175 lives were saved, virtually all of whom would have been otherwise killed or capture by enemy forces, contributing to over 3000 lives saved during this conflict. The exemplary leadership, personal endeavor and devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Vargas in this responsible position reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
