Airman's or Soldier's Medal Recipients

Attention to orders. Citation to accompany the award of the Airman's Medal to Master Sergeant James Souza

Master Sergeant James Souza distinguished himself by heroism involving voluntary risk of life at sea, four hundred nautical miles northeast of Bermuda, on 11 November 1970.  On that date, Sergeant Souza was scrambled aboard an HC-130 to render medical aid to the seriously ill Captain of a shipping vessel.  Despite poor weather, lack of communication and the advent of darkness he parachuted into the high seas to board the vessel and administer to the stricken Captain.  By his courageous action and humanitarian regard for his fellow man, Sergeant Souza has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
