Site Mission: Provide Pararescue and Air Rescue History

Airman's or Soldier's Medal Recipients

Attention to orders. Citation to accompany the award of the Airman's Medal to Staff Sergeant Jules C. Smith

Staff Sergeant Jules C. Smith distinguished himself by heroism involving voluntary risk of life at DaNang Air Base, Republic of Vietnam on 16 March 1970.  On that date, Sergeant Smith was serving as Pararescue specialist on the crew of an HH-43F Rescue Helicopter, which responded to the site of a EC-121 crash.  With complete disregard for his own safety, Sergeant Smith, despite exploding ordnance and burning fuel and oil, unhesitatingly worked on the ground, administering immediate first aid to the survivors.  Through his efforts, Sergeant Smith was instrumental in the saving of eight survivors’ lives.  The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Sergeant Smith reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
