Airman's or Soldier's Medal Recipients
Attention to orders. Citation to accompany the award of the Airman's Medal to Sergeant Eric C. Sachs
Sergeant Eric C. Sachs distinguished himself by heroism involving voluntary risk of life at Byron Glacier, Alaska, on 26 October 1986. On that date, Sergeant Sachs observed a woman tumble down an ice field, becoming lodged in a narrow crevasse some 40 feet below the surface. He took control of the situation by convincing nearby park rangers of his qualifications and persuading them to gather together the appropriate equipment. After assembling make-shift harnesses, Sergeant Sachs was lowered headfirst into the deep crevasse. The icy walls were too narrow for him, so he was forced to exhale all his air to work his way down to the victim. After looping ropes around her legs and arms, he instructed the men above to begin pulling them both slowly and painfully to the surface. Once out, Sergeant Sachs rendered immediate medical attention to stabilize the individual until further assistance arrived. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Sergeant Sachs reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
