Attention to orders. Citation to accompany the award of the Airman's Medal to Staff Sergeant Robert V. McCullough |
|
Staff Sergeant Robert V. McCullough distinguished himself by heroism involving voluntary risk of life near Terceira Island, Azores, Portugal on 19 January 1968. On that date, he volunteered to parachute to the aid of a critically injured seaman aboard the West German freighter "Elbe Oldendorff." Despite low ceilings, poor visibility, 15 foot seas, gusty surface winds, and a report of sharks circling the vessel, Sergeant McCullough, with complete disregard for his own safety unhesitatingly parachuted to the aid of the stricken seaman. By his courageous action and humanitarian regard for his fellow man, Sergeant McCullough has reflected great credit on himself and the United States Air Force.
