Sergeant Anthony R. Gargano distinguished himself by heroism
involving voluntary risk of life in the Zagras Mountain
Range of Iran on 30 January 1962. On that date, as part of
a two-man pararescue team, Sergeant Gargano, with complete
disregard for his own safety, parachuted into an extremely
hazardous area under adverse weather conditions in an
attempt to bring aid and relief to five survivors of a light
plane crash who were trapped at 13,000 feet and near death
from exposure. By his courageous action and humanitarian
regard for his fellow man, Sergeant Gargano reflected great
credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
