Technical Sergeant Andrew Bernal
distinguished himself by heroism involving voluntary risk of
life near Page, Arizona on 18 July 1968. On that date
Sergeant Bernal, while on a search and rescue mission for a
crashed civilian aircraft, did voluntarily parachute into
the scene of the crash. The crash site, located near a
sheer cliff of over 1000 feet in height and with strong,
swirling winds on the surface made the jump extremely
hazardous. Sergeant Bernal, with complete disregard for his
own safety, did parachute to the crash victim and save his
life. By his courageous action and humanitarian regard for
his fellow man, Sergeant Bernal has reflected great credit
upon himself and the United States Air Force.
